THE SUPERKÄFER -> RELATED MODELS -> PORSCHE 924 |
The
Porsche 924 was designed in the early 1970's by Porsche, with the original
idea of marketing it under the Audi name, with VW manufacturing it. The
fuel crisis of the 70's hit, just before the 924 was to go into production
and as a result, Porsche took over the rights to the car, while VW still
manufactured it for them. The car ended up being put together with a mix
of VW-Audi and Porsche parts, especially the suspension parts, most of
which it shared with the VW 1302 / 1303.
The
car itself offered impressive handling, with it's engine in the front
and transaxle in the rear, it had near perfect 48 / 52% weight distribution.
The engine let it down however, as it was only a slightly modified, average
Audi 4 cylinder unit, as found in the Audi 80. The development of the
924 progressed, Porsche modified the engine and suspension, improving
the performance and handling. The model was revamped with the 944 in the
80's when it recieved an all new Porsche 2.5 litre 4 cylinder engine.
